It was a good run, but the Gregori Jaguars unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Thursday. They took a 62-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of Central Catholic. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Friday (56), Gregori still had to take the loss.
When it comes to explaining why Gregori lost, one person who can't be blamed is Dru Shafer. Despite the final result, he went 9 for 15 from beyond the arc en route to 31 points and 4 assists. Those 31 points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayson Powers, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and six blocks.
Even though they lost, Gregori were working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Central Catholic only racked up 20 assists.
Leading Central Catholic to victory were Tyler Wentworth and Wesley Payne. Wentworth scored 18 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds, while Payne scored 21 points. The match was Payne's ninth in a row with at least ten points. James Mcgee was another key contributor, scoring five points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Gregori's defeat dropped their record down to 9-8. As for Central Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gregori will take on Downey at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Central Catholic won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against East Union at 7:30 p.m. on January 5th. East Union will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 981st, while Central Catholic is ranked 249th).
