Softball Recap: Edgewood's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Edgewood came into Thursday's match having lost five straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Aberdeen Eagles a 15-0 shutout on Thursday. The Rams' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Valeria Gutierrez made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Audriana Hansen and Oliva Nerad did most of the damage at the plate: Hansen scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Nerad scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. That run was Hansen's first of the season. Makayla Cole was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Edgewood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Edgewood's win bumped their record up to 2-5. As for Aberdeen, they are on an 11-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Edgewood will square off against C. Milton Wright at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Aberdeen, they will face off against Joppatowne at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mariners have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13 runs per game on average), something the Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of.
