The Vermilion Sailors and the Perkins Pirates squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly the Vermilion Sailors had to settle for second. Vermilion was beaten by Perkins 44-6. Vermilion's defeat continues a unfortunate trend for the squad, making it seven in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Vermilion lost, one person who can't be blamed is Aaron Mathis. Despite the final result, he threw for 53 yards and a touchdown.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Perkins to victory, but perhaps none more so than Braylon Collier, who picked up 189 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Collier's longest reception was for an incredible 82 yards. Another player making a difference was Isaac Bunts, who rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries.
Vermilion's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 3-8. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 1.5 points per game. As for Perkins, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 11-0.
Vermilion does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Perkins will look to defend their home field on Friday against Memorial at 7:00 p.m. Memorial is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
