Two dominant players in Robert Sorensen and Evan Haywood are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory Braves at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Guerin Catholic has three straight wins, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Saturday, Guerin Catholic faced Cathedral in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Guerin Catholic escaped with a win against Cathedral by the margin of a single free throw, 48-47.
Guerin Catholic's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bryson Cardinal, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Cardinal is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sorensen, who scored 12 points along with four steals.
Meanwhile, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory pushed their score all the way to 65 last Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Ben Davis 71-65. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their last game two weeks ago (64), Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory still had to take the loss.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Haywood, who scored 25 points along with six rebounds. That was a full 38.5% of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Quinn Warren, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Guerin Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. As for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory, they bumped their record down to 7-4 with that loss, which was their third straight on the road.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's game: Guerin Catholic have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 4.8 threes per game. It's a different story for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory, though, as they've been averaging only 6.1 threes per game. Given Guerin Catholic's sizeable advantage in that area, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory will need to find a way to close that gap.
Guerin Catholic was able to grind out a solid win over Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, winning 58-45. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory's Cameron Freeman, who scored 19 points. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Guerin Catholic to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
