The South Kingstown Rebels will face off against the East Greenwich Avengers at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. South Kingstown has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the match with three straight losses, while East Greenwich will come in with four straight victories.
The home team had come away the winner the last five times South Kingstown and Westerly had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Rebels came up short against the Bulldogs on Saturday, falling 16-2. Rebels fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Bulldogs since on Saturday.
Tessa O'Sullivan made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one double. Abigail O'Rourke also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, East Greenwich hadn't done well against Scituate recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Avengers walked away with a 7-4 win over the Spartans.
Kayleigh Chaiyabhat spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Brooke Fairbanks and Olivia DeShazo did most of the damage at the plate: Fairbanks went 3-for-4 with two runs and one double, while DeShazo went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Chloe Hartman, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
East Greenwich kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in eight consecutive contests.
East Greenwich's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-4. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for South Kingstown, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-9.
East Greenwich's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: South Kingstown has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .505. It's a different story for East Greenwich, though, as they've only averaged .361. Will they be able to contain South Kingstown's hitters?
