Clovis East is 1-9 against Central East since November of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Timberwolves will take on the Bengals at 7:00 p.m. That matchup will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Jamie Spurgeon and Jelani Dippel.
Things were looking good for Clovis East after they put the first points on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 27-20 to Clovis North. While the Timberwolves didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Broncos 6-0 in the first quarter.
Even if they lost, Clovis East's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Caleb Slocum and Devyn Perez, who each picked up 0.5 sacks apiece. Cordae Colbert was another major factor on D, forcing one fumble, making 11 total tackles, and defending one pass.
Meanwhile, Central East had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22.3 points) and they went ahead and made it eight on Thursday. They walked away with a 46-38 victory over the Bears.
Central East found their leader in sophomore Dippel, who threw for 370 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also rushed for 42 yards. Kevin Cooks showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 65 yards.
Central East was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 279 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 204 rushing yards in eight consecutive games.
Clovis East's defeat dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Central East, their win bumped their record up to 9-1.
Clovis East took a serious blow against Central East in their previous matchup back in October, falling 50-20. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Dippel, who threw for 426 yards and six TDs while completing 73.5% of his passes, and also rushed for 62 yards and one score. Now that the Timberwolves know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
