Ellie Peterson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on three hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ashlyn Sutherland, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Mallory Siddiqui also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Cumberland, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over Ladysmith on Monday.
Morgan Monchilovich was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Monchilovich was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Macy Beecroft and Presli Butzler did most of the damage at the plate: Beecroft went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Butzler went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
Northwestern's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-2. As for Cumberland, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season.
Everything went Northwestern's way against Cumberland in their previous meeting back in April, as Northwestern made off with a 9-0 victory. Will the Tigers repeat their success, or do the Beavers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
