Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Mount Union walked away with it. They blew past the Moshannon Valley Black Knights/Damsels 12-2 on Saturday. Considering the Trojans have won ten contests by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Cody McClain made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. McClain was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Davin Yocum tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 16 consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Julian Weirich, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Abe Weirich, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
Mount Union always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Moshannon Valley only posted an OBP of .318.
Mount Union has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Moshannon Valley, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-9.
