Basketball Recap: Tayvion Tangiora Key Part of a Team Effort in Pirates Win

Swansboro is still undefeated this season after their matchup against Southwest Onslow on Monday, but Southwest Onslow came as close as anyone has to beating them. The Swansboro Pirates sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 65-62 victory over the Southwest Onslow Stallions. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked seventh, while the Stallions are ranked 42nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Swansboro to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tayvion Tangiora, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten boards. Tangiora is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 17 or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jermaine Cunningham, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 boards.

Southwest Onslow lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Rue Chapman, who went 5 of 6 on his way to 17 points along with seven boards and six assists. Jonathan Pittman was another key player, going 5 of 6 on his way to 16 points.

Swansboro's win bumped their record up to 11-0. As for Southwest Onslow, with the defeat, they broke their six-game winning streak and moved their record to 7-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. After both having extra time off, Swansboro and Richlands will dust off their jerseys to square off against one another at 7:30 p.m. on January 10th. One thing working in Swansboro's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season. As for Southwest Onslow, they will take on Wallace-Rose Hill at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Southwest Onslow is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 64.2 points per game this season.
