Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in prep basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023-24 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Reynolds Johnston of
Loyola-Sacred Heart (Missoula) is the 2023-24 Montana MaxPreps Player of the Year. The 6-foot-6 junior forward led the Rams to a 25-0 record and their second consecutive Class B state championship.
For the season, Johnston averaged 17.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 61.4 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line.
In a 69-54 victory over Fairview the the state title game, Johnston contributed 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He averaged 20.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in three state tournament games.
Johnston has helped Loyola-Sacred Heart to a record of 50-1 over the past two seasons with an average margin of victory of 34.3 points per contest during that span.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released April 10.
