Jackson Kuhn made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. He was even better at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.
In other batting news, Waldron got a massive performance out of Troy Atwood, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave Atwood a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hunter Dodson, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Waldron kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Southwestern hadn't done well against South Decatur recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Spartans were the clear victors by an 11-2 margin over the Cougars. The Spartans not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since May 4, 2024.
James Oliver made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Oliver was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Landon Drake, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Clayton Randolph was another key player, going 1-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
The victory made it two in a row for Southwestern and bumps their season record up to 2-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Waldron, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.
Waldron suffered a grim 12-1 defeat to Southwestern in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Mohawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
