Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask West Carteret). They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 91-88 victory over the Croatan Cougars on Friday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 82-77 last Friday.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead West Carteret to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jay Murray, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Murray a new career-high in boards. Jejuan Tripp was another key player, shooting 7-for-13 from long range and dropping a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds.
West Carteret smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in eight consecutive games.
Despite the loss, Croatan saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kannon McBride dropped a double-double with 27 points and 12 boards. The matchup was McBride's sixth in a row with at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaden Hilliard, who went 8-for-12 to rack up 23 points.
West Carteret's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-7. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.7 points over those games. As for Croatan, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-7.
West Carteret has already played their next contest, an 84-70 loss against Swansboro on the 22nd. Croatan does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
