After losing to Canton the last time they met, Athens decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Warriors with a sharp 15-7 victory on Wednesday. Considering the Wildcats have won 11 matches by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Kamdyn Wheeler was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Athens got a massive performance out of Eli Hobday, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most hits Hobday has posted since back in April. Brendan Cooke was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run.
Athens' win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-3. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Canton, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season.
Athens will challenge Hughesville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Canton does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
