The Mid Valley Spartans are taking a road trip to challenge the Honesdale Hornets at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Mid Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Mid Valley is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs on Tuesday, they were much more limited against Riverside on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Vikings by a score of 3-2. The Spartans' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
Mid Valley saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carter Musewicz, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Honesdale earned a 6-3 victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hornets.
Jared Ahern spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up ten Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Connor Tirney was excellent, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Martin, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
Honesdale's win bumped their record up to 8-11. As for Mid Valley, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 12-1 and their overall record down to 15-4.
Honesdale's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mid Valley hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. It's a different story for Honesdale, though, as they've only averaged .234. Will they be able to contain Mid Valley's hitters?
Mid Valley took their victory against Honesdale when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
