Spanish Springs is a perfect 10-0 against Reno since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Cougars will square off against the Huskies at 9:00 a.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Spanish Springs has five straight victories, Reno has 11 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Spanish Springs is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Carson, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Spanish Springs was ranked third). The Cougars put the hurt on the Senators with a sharp 11-1 win on Saturday. Considering the Cougars have won 11 games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Spanish Springs got a great performance from Hannah Fitzpatrick as she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and not a single walk). Fitzpatrick has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Spanish Springs let Joey Jacobs and Maddy Marshall run wild. Jacobs went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Marshall went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Jacobs has posted since back in March. Hailey Robinson also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Spanish Springs was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .550. They are 12-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Reno's offense. They lost 16-0 to Galena on Thursday.
Spanish Springs' victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-7-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Reno, their loss dropped their record down to 1-24-1.
Reno's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Spanish Springs has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .454. It's a different story for Reno, though, as they've only averaged .318. Will they be able to contain Spanish Springs' hitters?
Spanish Springs took their victory against Reno in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 15-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
