Newton South is 1-9 against Westford Academy since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Lions will host the Grey Ghosts at 9:30 a.m. Newton South is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
On Friday, Newton South got the win against Brookline by a conclusive 19-2. Considering the Lions have won ten games by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Sophie Nathanson was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Nathanson was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Lila Coull was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Lauren Kelley, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Westford Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 11-0 to Chelmsford, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
Westford Academy saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Natalie Dubuc, who went 2-for-3 with one double.
Newton South has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.3 runs over those games. As for Westford Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-11.
Westford Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Newton South has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Westford Academy, though, as they've been averaging 10.5 hits. Given Newton South's sizable advantage in that area, the Grey Ghosts will need to find a way to close that gap.
