St. Mary's Ryken is 8-2 against Paul VI since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Knights will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 4:00 p.m. St. Mary's Ryken's pitching crew has only allowed 1.3 runs per game this season, so Paul VI's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
St. Mary's Ryken is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maryland's top teams: Huntingtown, who was ranked 23rd at the time (St. Mary's Ryken was ranked 11th). The Knights never let the Hurricanes get on the board and left with a 2-0 win on Saturday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Knights.
Not much got past Emmaleigh Zagrodnichek, who gave up just two hits and racked up 16 Ks to keep Huntingtown off the board.
On the hitting side, St. Mary's Ryken saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Myla Harding, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI. That RBI was Harding's first of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Paul VI). They were the clear victors by a 22-1 margin over The Academy of the Holy Cross on Monday. The victory was familiar territory for the Panthers, who have now won five games in a row.
Elizabeth Sullivan made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Paul VI got a massive performance out of Natalie Monroe, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. McKenna Drawbaugh was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-2.
Paul VI always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .658. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Paul VI's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-6. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for St. Mary's Ryken, their win bumped their record up to 6-3.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. St. Mary's Ryken hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .369. However, it's not like Paul VI struggles in that department as they've averaged .320. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went St. Mary's Ryken's way against Paul VI in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as St. Mary's Ryken made off with a 10-0 victory. Do the Knights have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
