The Vestaburg Wolverines will head out on the road to face off against the Coleman Comets at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Last Friday, Vestaburg was beaten by the Irish 62-13. While losing is never fun, Vestaburg can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 389th, while the Irish are ranked 109th).
Meanwhile, Coleman's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight defeat. They suffered a tough 35-15 defeat at the hands of Merrill. Coleman has not had much luck with the Vandals recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Coleman had strong showings from Nevaeh Chaffee, who scored five points along with six rebounds and two steals, and Nora Brownlee, who scored no points. Chaffee is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for three games straight.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Coleman struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only an offensive rebound. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Vestaburg's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-8. As for Coleman, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-11.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Vestaburg have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 24.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Coleman struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Vestaburg was able to grind out a solid victory over the Comets when the teams last played back in December of 2023, winning 43-34. Does Vestaburg have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Comets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
