The Washington County Panthers put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against Martin County by a score of 63-56. Given Washington County's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 121st, while the Knights are ranked 265th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Washington County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brandon Carter Jr., who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Carter Jr. is crushing the steal category: he's posted at least three every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Amari Chesson, who scored 16 points along with eight rebounds.
Martin County lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jysen Shepherd, who scored 13 points. Kel'javious Moore was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Washington County pushed their record up to 15-0 with that victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.5 points per game. As for Martin County, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Washington County will take on the Warriors at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. North Edgecombe has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 1,172 points over their last 16 matches. As for Martin County, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the Vikings at 7:30 p.m. on February 2nd.
