Oxford extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 1 this week by beating New Hope, 29-17. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Chargers.
West Point took down Hernando 49-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Saltillo's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Andrew Soper threw for 225 and three touchdowns and AJ Hunt had 193 yards receiving. On the ground Soper chipped in 205 yards. AJ Rye helped Saltillo's passing attack out by catching three balls for 32 yards.
Cole Paulino made the biggest impact on defense this week as Center Hill fell to Lake Cormorant. The 5-foot-8 junior grabbed one interception and forced one fumble.
6-foot-5 quarterback Parker Adamson of Oxford is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1105. He has also thrown seven touchdowns. On the ground, the Tigers' Soper has rushed for 642 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Hunt. The Saltillo star has 20 catches for 510 yards.
Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Saltillo takes on the Mustangs. Pat Byrd's team's offense has scored 193 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Center Hill has allowed only 192 on the year.
A big matchup in 5A Region 1 this week will be when Lake Cormorant takes on Johnny Hill's team. Nick Nester's team is currently in fourth, while the Chargers are in first.
Lake Cormorant made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,312 from 2,946. The improvement came about via a 30-24 victory over Alan Peacock's team last week.
