Commerce has enjoyed a four-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge The Elbert County Blue Devils at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
You're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Commerce on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Athens Christian out of the water with a 39-0 final score. Given Commerce's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 138th, while Athens Christian is ranked 460th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Elbert County had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.6 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They walked away with a 21-9 victory over Rabun County.
Elbert County's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Jayvyn Hickman, who threw for 80 yards and a touchdown, and Jacari Barnett, who rushed for 154 yards. Barnett is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last five games he's played.
Commerce's victory was their fifth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 7-1. Elbert County has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in seven of their first eight games, giving them a 7-1 record.
Commerce suffered a grim 41-21 defeat to Elbert County when the teams last played back in October of 2022. Thankfully for Commerce, Quan Moss (who rushed for 206 yards and five touchdowns) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
