The South Eugene Axe will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Willamette Wolverines at 6:45 p.m. South Eugene has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 1,047 points over their last 15 matches.
Even though Grants Pass scored an imposing 62 points on Friday, South Eugene still came out on top. South Eugene secured a 68-62 W over Grants Pass. The score was all tied up 29-29 at the break, but South Eugene was the better team in the second half.
South Eugene's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Landyn Bryant led the charge by scoring 16 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Levi Hawes, who almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, Willamette's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their tenth straight loss. They took a 67-63 hit to the loss column at the hands of Roseburg. While losing is never fun, Willamette can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Oregon basketball rankings (they are ranked 216th, while Roseburg is ranked 45th).
South Eugene's victory bumped their record up to 10-11. As for Willamette, they have not been sharp recently as the team has lost 11 of their last 12 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-20 record this season.
Everything went South Eugene's way against Willamette when the teams last played back in January as South Eugene made off with a 80-60 victory. Will South Eugene repeat their success, or does Willamette have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
