The Trego Golden Eagles had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They walked away with a 51-40 victory over Oakley. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Trego also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2023.
Trego got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Reece Smith out in front who scored 18 points along with two steals. Avery Ziegler was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with two steals.
When it comes to explaining why Oakley lost, one person who can't be blamed is Karli Krier. Despite the final result, she scored 15 points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that Krier scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Justice Booker, who scored eight points along with eight rebounds.
Even though they lost, Oakley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Trego only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Trego has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. As for Oakley, they now have a losing record at 4-5.
Trego will be playing at home against Phillipsburg at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Kansas (Phillipsburg is ranked 114th, while Trego is ranked 116th). Oakley won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Hill City at 4:30 p.m. on January 13th. Hill City is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
