There's no place like home for the Elmira Express, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road last Wednesday. They took their matchup at home on Saturday with ease, bagging a 53-25 victory over Corning-Painted Post. Given Elmira's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 167th, while Corning-Painted Post is ranked 411th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Elmira to victory, but perhaps none more so than Mariah Matias, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds. Matias is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last eight games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashaya Wallace, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Elmira's victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 6-5. As for Corning-Painted Post, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elmira will square off against Newark Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Corning-Painted Post, they will head out on the road to face off against Varsity Opponent at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
