SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Washington is among the finalists for the services of 6-foot-9 Jefferson (Portland, Ore.) senior Terrence Jones.
With Husky head coach Lorenzo Romar and a handful of potential future teammates on hand at UW’s Bank of America Arena for a game against Washington power Federal Way (12-1), the versatile star was out to impress. The nation’s No. 12 player in the class of 2010 according to MaxPreps, Jones flirted with a triple-double by registering 22 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots, leading Jefferson (11-2) to a 62-58 victory.
“Coming into this game, we came off a bad little losing streak at the Les Schwab Invitational and we wanted to bounce back by winning here,” Jones said. “I just wanted to win. It doesn’t say anything about me when we win, it’s just pretty much a team thing.”
Jones set the tone early on both ends, delivering three big dunks in the first half and swatting away shots that left Washington’s defending 4A state champions and 18th-ranked team nationally hesitant to attack the rim for the remainder of the game.
“His numbers were actually kind of low compared to what he has been doing the rest of the season, and you can attribute that to a good Federal Way defense,” Jefferson head coach Pat Strickland said. “Terrence Jones, what can I say? Mr. Do-it-all. He can play the point, he can play the five. He can guard the point or guard the five. It’s better to have him on your bench than on the other bench.”
The Democrats, Oregon’s defending Class 5A state champions, threatened to make the featured game of the King Holiday Hoopfest an uncompetitive one by stretching their lead to as many as 15 points in the third quarter. But Federal Way fought back behind the play of senior standouts Cole Dickerson (18 points, nine rebounds) and Isiah Umipig (15 points, three assists).
The Eagles steadily cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter and drew to within four points in the final minute of the game, but Jones and senior wing Stephen Madison (17 points, eight rebounds) notched late baskets that ensured a happy bus ride back to Portland.
“We knew it was going to be a dogfight coming in to their home territory,” Strickland said. “They have some good players and are a well-coached team.”
Jefferson will have another shot to knock off a Washington opponent on national television Feb. 2 when it faces UCLA-bound Josh Smith and Kentwood on ESPN2.
Enumclaw 53, Bellevue 47
In a battle pitting two of the top three teams in Washington’s 3A classification, Coleman Clyde netted 21 points to lead Enumclaw (12-0) past Stanford-bound Aaron Bright and Bellevue (12-1).
The Hornets, ranked No. 2 by the Seattle Times, dominated the boards and got 12 points from Taylor Myers and 10 from Tarren VanTrojen to hand the Wolverines their first loss of the season.
Bright led Bellevue with 21 points.
Rainier Beach 59, Decatur 53
Rainier Beach (10-3) jumped to a 14-3 lead to begin the game and used double-double efforts from Lonnie Pearson and Jeff Perkins to stave off a second-half Decatur (10-4) rally.
Pearson, a 6-6 senior, scored 15 points and grabbed 11 boards while 6-5 junior Jeff Perkins contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Vikings led by as many as 13 in the second quarter but the Gators – behind Jordan McCloud (23 points, 10 rebounds) and Jerron Smith (14 points, four rebounds) – chipped away and eventually evened the score with a little over a minute remaining in the game.
Grant (Portland, Ore.) 61, Franklin 56 – 2OT
Junior guard Anthony Penney scored 15 points and sophomore forward Tre Battle added 12 and 10 rebounds as Grant (4-8) outlasted Franklin (6-6), Washington’s defending 3A state champion.
The Portland squad led by 10 at halftime but Franklin rallied behind freshman Arell Hennings (15 points) and senior Juwuan Buchanan (10 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocked shots) to force a pair of overtimes.
Quaker standout sophomore Anrio Adams fouled out in the second extra session and Grant took advantage, outscoring Franklin 11-6 in the final four minutes.
Skyline 48, Garfield 40
All-State wide receiver Kasen Williams is a force on the hardwood, too, posting 16 points and 12 rebounds as Skyline knocked off Garfield, 48-40.
Williams, a 6-3 junior with offers to play football from the likes of Florida, LSU, Notre Dame and Washington, entered the game averaging 9.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Skyline (11-1) also got 11 points and seven rebounds from 6-9 senior Cory Hutsen.
Freshman Daeshon Hall led Garfield (8-4) with 10 points and eight rebounds.
