Basketball Recap: Cara Toledo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cuba over Laguna Acoma

Cuba fought the good fight in their overtime game against Laguna Acoma on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Laguna Acoma Hawks 60-54. The Rams were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hawks apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Several Rams players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cara Toledo, who went 8 for 15 en route to 23 points. The dominant performance gave Toledo a new career-high in points. Denale Sandoval was another key player, putting up 13 points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Cuba smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Laguna Acoma only pulled down two offensive rebounds.

Laguna Acoma's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Brianna Carrillo, who went 5 of 11 on her way to 15 points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Gianna Carrillo, who posted 17 points.

Cuba has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season. As for Laguna Acoma, they now have a winning record of 6-5.

Cuba wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 67-42 defeat against Newcomb on the 13th. As for Laguna Acoma, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 55-54 victory against Zuni on the 14th.
