Cumberland Valley (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 10 points, drop to three before the final whistle blew on a 17-14 victory over
State College (Pa.).
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Ben Fernback to
Jeremy Salmon in the second quarter, the Eagles led 10-7 at the half.
Cumberland Valley expanded its lead to 10 points entering the fourth quarter. CV's lone score in the quarter came on a Fernback touchdown pass to
Garrett Long.
The loss snapped the Little Lions' 4-game winning streak.
Fernback stood out for the Mechanicsburg school in the win. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored seven touchdowns on the season.
Dan Fry played well for State College. The senior running back caught two touchdowns. His performance brought his touchdown total to seven on the year.
The Eagles came in allowing an average of 24.8 points per game this season. Cumberland Valley held firm on the defensive front, and kept SC well below the 24.4 points it had been averaging per game.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 45-21 win for CV.
The win was a nice bounce back for the Eagles, which lost to Harrisburg last week, 34-14. The loss comes after State College defeated Mifflin County 20-13 last week.
