The Saugus Centurions will be taking part in a tournament against the Rio Mesa Spartans at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Saugus is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Saugus made easy work of Golden Valley and carried off an 11-1 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Centurions.
Saugus got a great performance from Riley Nelson as she struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts Nelson has posted since back in March of 2024.
On the hitting side, Amelia Johnson was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Savanna Smith was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Saugus always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Golden Valley only posted an OBP of .062.
Meanwhile, Rio Mesa came up short against Westlake on Saturday and fell 7-4. The Spartans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Rio Mesa saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Alvarez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. Another was Keira Barry, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
Saugus' record is now 12-4. As for Rio Mesa, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-4.
Saturday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Saugus has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .463. However, it's not like Rio Mesa struggles in that department as they've averaged .449. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Saugus was able to grind out a solid victory over Rio Mesa when the teams last played back in March of 2022, winning 5-1. Does Saugus have another victory up their sleeve, or will Rio Mesa turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
