In what's become a running theme this season, the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars gave their fans yet another huge win on Friday. They blew past Washington 65-33 on the road. Given SouthWest Edgecombe's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 131st, while Washington is ranked 395th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
SouthWest Edgecombe got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Aaliyah Whitehead out in front who scored 24 points along with five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Whitehead has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kd Collins, who scored 14 points along with nine assists and four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Washington lost, one person who can't be blamed is Breanna Perry. Despite the final result, she scored 16 points. That was a full 48.5% of Washington's points, marking the 13th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
SouthWest Edgecombe is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season. As for Washington, they are on a 11-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-12.
SouthWest Edgecombe won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Tarboro at 4:30 p.m. on January 20th. As for Washington, they will head out on the road to face off against Ayden - Grifton at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ayden - Grifton has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 19.
