Lubbock is 1-9 against the Plainsmen since November of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Lubbock Westerners are on the road again and plays the Monterey Plainsmen at 6:00 p.m. on February 6th. Lubbock will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 603rd, while the Plainsmen are ranked 13th).
Last Tuesday, Lubbock was beaten by the Bulldogs 60-33.
Meanwhile, Monterey had already won 20 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28.2 points), and they went ahead and made it 21 on Tuesday. They blew past Cooper 102-35 on the road. Monterey has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 17 contests by 21 points or more this season.
Ambrosia Cole and Aaliyah Chavez were among the main playmakers for Monterey as the former scored 34 points along with six rebounds and five assists and the latter dropped a triple-double on 39 points, 19 rebounds, and 14 assists. Chavez is crushing the point category: she's posted at least 22 every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaliyah Luna, who scored seven points.
Lubbock has not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last nine matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-20 record this season. As for Monterey, they pushed their record up to 28-5 with that victory, which was their seventh straight on the road.
Lubbock was taken down by the Plainsmen 89-38 when the teams last played back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Chavez, who shot 12-for-20 from long range and almost dropped a double-double on 47 points and nine steals. Now that Lubbock knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
