Former Oakland Raider Ray Guy is the only punter to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and as a result, he highlights the ongoing MaxPreps list of every state's greatest position players.
While Guy does not have the highest career punting average from his home state of Georgia, he is generally regarded as the NFL's greatest punter, mainly for his long hang times and coffin corner kicks. His legacy includes the Ray Guy Award, which honors college football's best punter ever year.
The punter with the highest career punting average is also a former Raider, Shane Lechler of East Bernard (Texas). He holds the NFL record with a 47.6 average.
A total of 15 states did not qualify a punter. They include
Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Nevada, New
Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota,
Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Punters are listed with their career average yards per punt.
