After each having a week off, the Carlsbad Lancers and the La Costa Canyon Mavericks will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on the 14th. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Thursday, Carlsbad took their game with ease, bagging a 34-6 win over Del Norte. The Lancers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by 20 points or more this season.

Carlsbad's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ian Wall, who rushed for 138 yards and one touchdown on only 11 carries, and also caught one score. Those 138 rushing yards gave Wall a new career-high. Another signal caller making a difference was Eli MacNeal, who threw for 175 yards and four TDs while completing 75% of his passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Carlsbad was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 285 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, La Costa Canyon had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.3 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They walked away with a 31-20 win over the Falcons. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Mavericks' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked tenth, while the Falcons are ranked 72nd).
Carlsbad better keep an eye on Coby Herman. He was instrumental in La Costa Canyon's win, rushing for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 11 carries. Herman really tore up the turf during one magnificent 92-yard run. Quinn Roth was another key player, throwing for 132 yards and one TD on only 12 passes.
Carlsbad's record now sits at 9-1. As for La Costa Canyon, their record is now an identical 9-1.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Carlsbad has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 187.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like La Costa Canyon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 189.7 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Carlsbad was taken down by La Costa Canyon 50-22 when the teams last played last Friday. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Herman, who rushed for 170 yards and three scores while picking up 10.6 yards per carry, and also picked up 93 receiving yards and one touchdown. Now that the Lancers know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
