The Delmar Wildcats will face off against the Delmarva Christian Royals at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Delmar has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Delmarva Christian will arrive with three straight victories.
Delmar is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Delaware's top teams: Sussex Academy, who was ranked 25th at the time (Delmar was ranked 21st). The Wildcats fell just short of the Seahawks by a score of 1-0 on Monday. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Wildcats were not able to get on the board.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Delmarva Christian). Everything went their way against Salisbury Christian on Monday as they made off with a 29-5 win. The result was nothing new for the Royals, who have now won six games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Chase Hitchens made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Andrew Collins was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs and two RBI. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (two). Silas Jones was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Delmarva Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .660. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Delmarva Christian pushed their record up to 12-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Delmar, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-9.
Delmar beat Delmarva Christian 7-3 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Do the Wildcats have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Royals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
