Softball Recap: Copper Canyon's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Copper Canyon can bid farewell to their 13-game losing streak dating back to last season thanks to their game on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Central Bobcats with a sharp 21-5 win. The Aztecs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Kayla Gonzalez made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, six RBI, and two triples. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Maria Espinoza and Nevaeh Aldana did most of the damage at the plate: Espinoza scored four runs and stole Five bases. while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances, while Aldana scored five runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave Espinoza a new career-high in hits (three). Another player making a difference was Ellecia Gonzales, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three runs and one triple.

Copper Canyon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .690. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Copper Canyon's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-8. As for Central, they are on a nine-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Coming up, Copper Canyon will venture away from home to take on Independence at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Independence will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Copper Canyon surely won't give up without a fight. As for Central, they will head out on the road to challenge La Joya Community at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Central has given up an average of 16.2 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
