Towanda and Athens are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Black Knights will be playing in front of their home fans against the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Towanda 3.1, Athens 1.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.
On Thursday, Towanda needed a bit of extra time to put away Troy. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Trojans, sneaking past 6-4. Six seems to be a good number for the Black Knights as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Tae Lynn Brabant spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, Towanda saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aleah Johnson, who went 3-for-5 with one stolen base and one RBI. That's the most hits Johnson has posted since back in April. Another was Kynlee Kunkle, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Athens had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. They never let the Warriors get on the board and left with an 11-0 win. Considering the Wildcats have won nine matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Savanannah Finan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of McKenna Jarvis, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Athens was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Canton only posted a batting average of .000.
Athens pushed their record up to 18-1 with the victory, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Towanda, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Towanda has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Athens struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 12.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Towanda couldn't quite finish off Athens when the teams last played back in March and fell 2-0. Will the Black Knights have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
