The Vernon Vikings will square off against the Phillipsburg Stateliners at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Vernon sitting on three straight wins and Phillipsburg on 20.
Last Tuesday, Vernon had just enough and edged Jefferson Township out 49-46.
Meanwhile, Phillipsburg made easy work of Bound Brook on Thursday and carried off a 63-37 victory. Given Phillipsburg's advantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 11th, while Bound Brook is ranked 131st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Phillipsburg can attribute much of their success to Andrew Martin, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds, and Matthew Scerbo jr., who scored 25 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Scerbo jr. has been hot recently, having posted 17 or more points the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Ameer Herran, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds.
Vernon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. As for Phillipsburg, their victory was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 20-1.
