The Salpointe Catholic Lancers waltzed into their matchup on Wednesday with nine straight wins but they left with ten. They enjoyed a cozy 68-49 victory over Sahuaro. Given Salpointe Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked sixth, while the Cougars are ranked 42nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Salpointe Catholic got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jordan Watts out in front who scored 14 points along with three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Taliyah Henderson, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Sahuaro's loss came despite strong showings from Cassandra Coolidge and Ny'Anza Brown. Coolidge scored 17 points along with two steals, while Brown scored 11 points. Another player making a difference was Biale Sika, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds.
Salpointe Catholic has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 20-3 record this season. As for Sahuaro, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 20-8.
Coincidentally, the pair will both be playing Mica Mountain the next time they take the court. Salpointe Catholic will host the Thunderbolts at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, while the Cougars will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
