Canyon is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. They will square off against the West Plains Wolves at 7:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Canyon put up the most points they have all season last Friday. They really took it to Piedra Vista for the full four quarters, racking up a 49-7 victory. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Eagles had established a 28-point advantage.
Bayler Schilling was the offensive standout of the game as he picked up 103 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Canyon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 328 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.
Another reason for the win was Canyon's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Da'Keydrion Ford, Zacchaeus Garcia, and Caden Cavanaugh, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Meanwhile, West Plains was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 41-35 to Liberty Christian. The loss was the Wolves' first of the season.
Canyon will have to contain REID MACON as he made an impact in West Plains' last game. He rushed for 113 yards and four scores, and also threw for 163 yards while completing 75% of his passes. SLADE RUSSELL helped out on the ground, rushing for 90 yards.
The win made it two in a row for Canyon and bumps their season record up to 4-1. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 41.5 points over those games. As for West Plains, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-1.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Canyon has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 243 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like West Plains struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 277.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Canyon ended up a good deal behind West Plains in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, losing 42-28. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
