III Section III recap Sept. 26, 2012
Ryan Finley and Gena Adams provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Moon Valley. The connection went for 96 yards, the longest such play in III Section III this season.
Desert Edge extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Estrella Foothills, 52-7. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
Tempe's dynamic duo of Emanuel Gant and Massiah Smith proved tough for Washington to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Gant threw for 416 yards and four touchdowns and Smith had 268 yards receiving. Sebastian Watkins helped Tempe's passing attack out by catching two balls for 56 yards.
Clarence Smith was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 226 yards on 20 carries as Youngker defeated the Rams. Teammate D'Angelo Calderon added to the ground attack by rushing for 64 yards.
6-foot-4 quarterback Finley of Paradise Valley is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1541. He has also thrown 15 touchdowns. On the ground, Thunderbird's Kani Benoit has rushed for 889 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Smith. The Tempe star has 36 catches for 553 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Desert Edge takes on Agua Fria. At the moment, Rich Wellbrock's team is in first, while the Owls are in fourth.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Scorpions take on Agua Fria. Desert Edge has allowed 50 points this season, while Craig Holland's team has given up 82. The Scorpions allowed 7 points last week as they defeated the Wolves.
Desert Edge was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Estrella Foothills 52-7. The Scorpions came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 32 last week.
