The Louisa County Lions fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Monticello Mustangs on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Mustangs 87-83. While losing is never fun, Louisa County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 315th, while the Mustangs are ranked 147th).
Several Lions players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Harlee Lowe, who almost dropped a double-double on 22 points and nine rebounds. It was the first time this season that Lowe scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Taylor Yeatts, who scored 26 points along with seven assists and four steals.
Samantha Shifflett continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Monticello, dropping a double-double on 40 points and 14 rebounds. Dylan Wood was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 25 points and ten rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Louisa County and nudges their season record down to 4-15. As for Monticello, their victory bumped their record up to 11-7.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Louisa County will take on the Fighting Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. That match will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Laney Fayard and Yeatts. As for Monticello, they and the Patriots will face off at 6:00 p.m. on February 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
