On Wednesday, the Mojave Rattlers faced the Coronado Cougars in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Mojave fell 81-72 to Coronado. Mojave's loss continues an unfortunate trend for the squad, making it three in a row.
Mojave's loss came despite strong showings from C.J. Shaw and Zacarrion Jackson. Shaw scored 29 points along with seven rebounds and two steals, while Jackson scored 13 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. Shaw is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Nathan Sherrard, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Coronado to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jonny Collins, who scored 26 points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Collins has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lantz Stephenson, who scored 20 points.
Mojave bumped their record down to 10-7 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home. As for Coronado, their win bumped their record up to 10-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mojave will square off against Foothill at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Foothill has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 188 points over their last three contests. Coronado's road trip will continue as they head out to face Spring Valley at 6:30 p.m. on January 16th. Spring Valley will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Nevada Rankings (they are ranked 39th, while Coronado is ranked fifth).
