The Layton Lancers will venture away from home to face off against the Bountiful RedHawks at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Layton has given up an average of 10.9 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Layton came up short against Syracuse on Tuesday, falling 17-2. The Lancers haven't had much luck with the Titans recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.
Meanwhile, Bountiful had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Royals a 15-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the RedHawks, who have now won 15 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Dylan Carpenter was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Bountiful let Abigail Orme and Claire Yates run wild. Orme went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple, while Yates went 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI Orme has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Ava Howe, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
Bountiful was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .364 or higher in four consecutive matches.
Bountiful pushed their record up to 20-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Layton, their loss dropped their record down to 3-16.
Layton beat Bountiful 4-1 when the teams last played back in April of 2016. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lancers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
