Baseball Recap: Father Lopez Finds Playoff Glory Versus Taylor

With a playoff win on the line, Father Lopez rose to the challenge on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Taylor Wildcats with a sharp 16-6 win. The Green Wave's hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Westen Brownlee spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on 11 hits. Father Lopez is 2-1 when Brownlee allows one or fewer earned runs, but 5-15 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Father Lopez got a massive performance out of Vincenzo (Vinny) Zimmerer, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those three runs gave Zimmerer a new career-high. Devin Johnson also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Father Lopez was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .485. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The victory snapped Father Lopez's losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 7-16 record. As for Taylor, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season.

Father Lopez will challenge Lake Highland Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last three games the Highlanders have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. Taylor does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
