The Scarborough Red Storm will head out to challenge the South Portland Red Riots at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Scarborough is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Scarborough was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against Westbrook on Tuesday. The Red Storm blew past the Blue Blazes 8-1. The Red Storm haven't had any issues with the Blue Blazes recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Scarborough got a great performance from Liam Vines as he didn't allow a single earned run over six innings pitched. Vines has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Finn Coburn, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Fallona, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases.
Meanwhile, South Portland waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They came out on top against the Trojans by a score of 6-2.
Hudson Iacuessa made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Iacuessa was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Cameron Barrett was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Jude Charltray was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.
Scarborough's win was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-1. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for South Portland, their record now sits at 11-4.
South Portland's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Scarborough has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .432. It's a different story for South Portland, though, as they've only averaged .359. Will they be able to contain Scarborough's hitters?
Scarborough came out on top in a nail-biter against South Portland in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Storm since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
