On Tuesday, the Clovis Wildcats faced the Lovington Wildcats in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Clovis came out on top against Lovington by a score of 67-55. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
It was another big night for Zarai Lewis, who scored 31 points along with five rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Kailyn Jefferson, who scored 14 points.
Elizabeth Buendia and Ashelynn Borunda certainly did their best on Tuesday to try and avoid the loss. Buendia scored 22 points along with two steals, while Borunda scored ten points along with six steals and five rebounds. Buendia has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Erlin Salcido was another key contributor, scoring four points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Clovis pushed their record up to 11-3 with that win, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.2 points per game. As for Lovington, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-4.
Clovis will take on Espanola Valley at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Lovington, Lovington and Ruidoso will face off at 4:30 p.m. on January 12th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Ruidoso will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New Mexico Rankings (they are ranked 95th, while Lovington is ranked 25th).
