The Bedford North Lawrence Stars will head out to face off against the Providence Pioneers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Bedford North Lawrence is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Bedford North Lawrence proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by 11) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They won by a run and slipped past Jennings County 4-3.
Meanwhile, Providence had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. They never let the Red Devils get on the board and left with a 12-0 win. Considering the Pioneers have won seven contests by more than six runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Not much got past Gavin Jackson, who gave up just three hits and racked up six Ks to keep Jeffersonville off the board. Jackson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Lucas Mauk and Cole Huett did most of the damage at the plate: Mauk got on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Huett went 1-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most stolen bases Mauk has posted since back in June of 2024. Brady Haynes was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Providence kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive matchups.
Bedford North Lawrence has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Providence, their record now sits at 12-5.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Bedford North Lawrence has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .461. However, it's not like Providence struggles in that department as they've averaged .443. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Bedford North Lawrence suffered a grim 11-2 defeat to Providence in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Stars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
