The Mattawan Wildcats will face off against the Lakeview Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Mattawan's pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so Lakeview's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Mattawan proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by 15) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Lakeland 7-5.
Maxx Vanantwerp looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mattawan let Troy Scarff and Nolan Jominy run wild. Scarff went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run, while Jominy went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Those three hits gave Jominy a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kaden Jominy, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Lakeview not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since May 1st (when they won 19-1). They were the clear victors by a 16-3 margin over Coldwater. The Spartans haven't had any issues with the Cardinals recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Spencer Shotwell was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Isaiah Jackson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Lakeview kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Coldwater only managed five hits.
Mattawan is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 24-4-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Lakeview, they pushed their record up to 11-12 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.
Mattawan took their win against Lakeview in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
