After taking the lead in the fourth quarter,
Ellington/Somers (Ellington, Conn.) held on for a 20-17 victory over
Gilbert-Northwestern Regional (Winsted, Conn.) on Saturday. The difference for the Knights was it threw a touchdown.
After trailing 7-3 at the half, the Yellowjackets went ahead on a touchdown pass by
John Lippincott to
Thomas Casey with 7:00 left in the third. Ellington/Somers finally took the lead for good as it threw a touchdown with 3:00 to go in the fourth quarter.
By the end of the third, ES found itself trailing by 3 points as Gilbert-Northwestern Regional captured the lead thanks to two scores in the quarter. GNR scored on a Lippincott touchdown pass to Casey and a passing touchdown in the quarter.
The Winsted school's Lippincott played well. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to two on the year.
The Ellington school also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 35-0.
The defeat comes as a step back for Gilbert-Northwestern Regional, which notched a 41-26 victory over Enfield in its previous outing. With the win the Knights extended their winning streak to three games.
Gilbert-Northwestern Regional (1-2) goes up against Sports & Medical Sciences Academy/University Science & Engineering in a Pequot - Uncas game matchup next week, while Ellington/Somers (3-0) locks horns with Granby Memorial also in a Pequot - Uncas game.
