It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but the Calhoun Academy Cougars had no problem doing just that on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 52-50 victory over Lee Academy. The win was nothing new for Calhoun Academy as they're now sitting on ten straight.
Coley Denton was his usual excellent self, rushing for 199 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 11.7 yards per carry. Denton hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Layton Logan, who gained 130 total yards and three touchdowns.
Calhoun Academy pushed their record up to 10-1 with that victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.5 points per game. As for Lee Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 8-3.
Calhoun Academy will square off against Sharkey Issaquena Academy at TBD on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Mississippi (Sharkey Issaquena Academy is ranked third, while Calhoun Academy is ranked fourth). Lee Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
