V Section III recap November 13, 2013
Benson fell to Round Valley 51-8 last week, the largest margin of any game. Travis Barney threw for 110 yards and 1 touchdown, ran for 37 yards and caught 1 pass for 40 yards in the loss.
Thatcher led V Section III in scoring this week after putting up 28 points on Morenci. Heath Motes threw for 76 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 111 yards in the win.
Benson's dynamic duo of Barney and Tyson Coleman proved to be unstoppable against the Elks, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Barney helped Benson's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 40 yards.
Motes provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Eagles bested the Wildcats. Motes' key target this week was Mitch Fullenwider, who caught 3 passes for 47 yards.
Motes made the biggest impact on defense this week as Thatcher beat Morenci. The 5-foot-11 junior grabbed 1 interception and recorded 1 fumble.
On the heels of Jake Whitfield and Gregory Villareal, Willcox has had great success on offense. Whitfield leads the league in passing with 1,261 yards, while Villareal has rushed for 1,416 yards this season. Bisbee's Spencer Schuller leads the league in receiving yards with 714 on 38 catches.
Dave Jefferies' team made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,760 from 4,821. The improvement was the result of a 28-6 victory over Frank Ogas' team last week.
